Chilli and Chocolate – an unlikely combination…

With National Chilli Day (25th February 2016) upon us, we wanted to explore how the incongruous collaboration of dark chocolate and chilli came into being. At first the idea of smooth chocolate paired with a fierce sharp taste tends to produce a mixed reaction, but the pairing has been around for quite some time…

Originating with the Aztecs, the practice of drinking a mixture of cocoa and chillies with bitter water indicated a higher status. It tended to be drunk by Aztec rulers, priests and other members of the aristocracy. Over the years, the Aztecs went on to adapt their recipe, and in time explored a solid version, thereby creating the first chilli chocolate bars.

Creating our own blend of chilli and chocolate came after being inspired by a traditional Mexican recipe following our trip to South America where we first came up with the idea of our chocolate company. Our Dark Chocolate and Chilli bar was one of the five original bars which we created, and we thought of it as something of a ‘surprise bar’ which our first customers loved! It still remains one of our most popular and talked about bars.

Following the success of our first chilli chocolate we began to expand the range using more unlikely flavour combinations. Our once limited edition favourite – Chilli and Lime – became a firm resident to the range after being a hit with customers.

But if you’re not ready to jump in at the deep end and experience the more wacky tastes then there is an alternative; the Kingdom milk chocolate, mango, lime and chilli bars have a slight sweetness about them, making the flavours more subtle than the other bars.
