Dark Chocolate - rounding up the best of the best!

Discover the benefits of dark chocolate

What would you say if we told you that dark chocolate wasn’t only extraordinarily delicious, but also had a whole host of benefits for the mind and body?

Now don’t get us wrong, we’re under no illusion that chocolate is ‘healthy’ but hear us out...

Where does chocolate come from?

We may be stating the obvious, but chocolate is made from cocoa beans, which are grown on trees (which already makes it sounds like a good choice!). Originally made into a bitter-tasting drink mixed with spices, it was believed to give the drinker strength. Chocolate was a firm staple in the diet of the Aztecs in Southern Mexico dating all the way back to 1440. In fact, Emperor Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin drank liquid chocolate in such large quantities (hoping to benefit from its supposed aphrodisiac effect)- sometimes up to 50 cups a day, that he inspired the term 'Montezuma's revenge' which is less about love and more about the loo!

Here's a little known fact - Montezuma's is an Anglicised version of Emporer Motecuhzoma Xocoyotzin! Check out our Cookbook for both sweet and savoury dark chocolate recipes.

What is the difference between milk and dark chocolate?

Without over-complicating things, milk chocolate is exactly what is says on the tin. It’s made up of cocoa solids, with milk and sugar added along the way. Our dark chocolate recipe differs from others in that we never use vegetable oils to make it cheaper and would never ever use palm oil. It’s just pure cocoa solids with 100% cocoa butter to give you that amazing chocolate snap.

Is your dark chocolate Vegan?

To cut a long story short, yes it is! The majority of our dark chocolate is made without milk, so these products are indeed Vegan. We have a whole host of Vegan chocolate bars, including Sea Dog, Royal Mint and Fitzroy.

Historically, dark chocolate has been the only option for Vegans. This is great news if you love dark chocolate, but not everyone is a fan. In 2018 we launched our vegan range Like No Udder. Our milk chocolate alternative is made with rice milk, rather than cow’s milk and tastes just like milk chocolate, honest, we’ve even won taste awards for it!

What are the benefits of dark chocolate?

Strictly speaking, we couldn’t call chocolate the healthiest treat, BUT if you’re looking to reduce your sugar consumption, dark chocolate is the perfect option for you to enjoy without feeling too guilty – but don’t forget, everything in moderation!

Not only is dark chocolate perfect for a little guilt-free indulgence, but it’s also known for improving your mental health. According to Psychology Today, the flavanols in cocoa activate anti-anxiety receptors. Eating chocolate and feeling less anxious at the same time, what’s not to love about that?

We’ve also been told by our customers on many occasions that a little bit of high cocoa chocolate a day really helps with their sugar cravings, but most importantly, chocolate makes you happy!

How dark can you go?

We’re so glad you asked! Our dark chocolate offering goes all the way from 51% to 100% - a whopping 100% cocoa solids. Let us introduce you to our Absolute Black range of 100% cocoa chocolate bars and buttons.

We like to call it the Marmite of chocolate, you either love it or hate it! It’s fair to say that it’s not for the faint-hearted and is definitely one for experienced dark chocolate connoisseurs to try. At Montezuma’s HQ we eat a small square every day and it really satisfies that chocolate craving without eating any sugar!

As this 100% dark chocolate bar consists entirely of 100% cocoa we need to make sure we are using exceptional quality cocoa as there are no other ingredients included to mask any imperfections in the flavour. That’s why our 100% range is just so popular, because it really does have an extraordinary taste without any bitterness like other brands you may find on the market. Fear not, we haven’t replaced ethics for quality either, you can read all about our trading fairly policy here.

Don’t just take our word for it, our extraordinary customers have given us some fabulous Dark Chocolate reviews too!

What other dark chocolate options are there?

If 100% cocoa is a little out of your comfort zone, that’s fine! We have our Splotch bar, which although is technically milk chocolate, is on the higher scale of cocoa solids. At 51% it is a good entry into the dark chocolate world.

We then go into our 70% dark chocolate bars which include Cherry Pie and Spice It Up.

For those who dare to go a little deeper we have 74% dark chocolate, which includes Chilli Bonkers, Royal Mint and last but by no means least, our famous dark chocolate buttons.

Whether you're looking for a tasty treat, healthy alternative or corporate chocolate gift, give the dark side a go! We’re pretty sure that once you’ve tried it, you won’t go back!
