Classic Apple Pie Recipe (with a chocolatey twist!)
Serves: 8
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 50–60 minutes
Cooling Time: 1–2 hours (if you can wait that long!)
Ingredients
For the filling:
- 6 tart apples (like Granny Smith or Bramley), peeled, cored & thinly sliced
- 100g (½ cup) light brown sugar
- 1½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
- 2 tbsp plain flour
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
For the crust:
- 250g plain flour (2 cups)
- 1 tsp sugar
- ½ tsp salt
- 170g cold unsalted butter, cubed
- 5–6 tbsp ice-cold water
Optional:
- 1 egg (for egg wash)
- 1 tbsp milk (to mix with egg wash)
- Demerara sugar for sprinkling
- Montezuma’s Giant Chocolate Buttons for drizzling – we used Giant Dark
Instructions
1. Make the crust
In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Rub in the cold butter until the mix resembles coarse crumbs. Add the ice water gradually, mixing until the dough comes together. Split into two discs, wrap, and chill for at least 30 minutes.
2. Prepare the filling
Toss the apple slices with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, lemon juice, vanilla, and a pinch of salt. Let them sit while you roll out your dough.
3. Assemble the pie
Roll out one dough disc and line your pie dish. Add the apple mixture and dot with a few small pieces of butter (optional). Roll out the second disc and place on top. Seal and crimp the edges, then cut slits in the top to let steam escape—or go full showstopper with a lattice.
4. Finish and bake
Brush the top with the egg and milk mixture, then sprinkle with demerara sugar. Bake at 190°C (375°F) for 50–60 minutes until golden brown and bubbling.
5. Drizzle with chocolate
Once cooled slightly, drizzle generously with melted Montezuma’s Giant Dark Chocolate Buttons. They melt beautifully and add a rich, decadent finish.
Optional Twists
- Add a splash of rum-soaked raisins to the apple mix.
- Mix in a handful of chopped nuts for crunch.
- Try it with Montezuma’s Milk or Blondie Buttons for a different kind of drizzle.
Happy National Apple Pie Day!
