Atlantic Escapade x Montezuma's

Atlantic Escapade x Montezuma's

Atlantic Escapade is a project in which Andy Hodgson and Rosalind Chaston will attempt to row 3,000 nautical miles entirely unassisted across the Atlantic Ocean. The pair were quick to get in touch with us at Montezuma’s as they started planning the adventure and we are over the moon to be supporting them. As Montezuma’s lovers, much of their training was fuelled by our chocolate and a hefty supply will join them to keep spirits and energy up as they set sail across the ocean.

Just weeks away from their departure this month Andy and Rosalind answered some of our burning questions:

What made you want to row across the Atlantic Ocean?

Rosalind: When I met Andy I'd never heard of ocean rowing, I really didn't know it was possible - I find the idea of being so far from land or anyone else is both exciting and terrifying in equal measure! I loved hearing about Andy's stories from when he was rowing solo around Britain and couldn't shake the feeling that I wanted to have a go. 2 years later and I've learned how to row, how to navigate at sea, how to sail, and first aid on the water!

Andy: It was Rosalind's idea!

What are you most excited about on the journey?

Andy: My experience so far is coastal so I'm really excited to see how an open ocean crossing compares. I love the experience of living in that exposed environment - you really notice all the colours and what's around you and every sunrise is a little bit more special.

Rosalind: For me, it's got to be the wildlife. My childhood bedroom still has dolphins all over the walls, so I really hope we get some close encounters. Some people are lucky enough to see whales, turtles, and sharks too which would be incredible!

What was the hardest part of training in the run up to the row?

Andy: Spending hours on end on the rowing machine is gruelling and you don't have any of the sight seeing from being at sea. Netflix and a Moto GP are a good distraction, but I never look forward to it.

Rosalind: The hardest part for me was transferring skills from land to the water. It's easy to tie a knot a million times when you're on dry land, but when your hands are numb, you're exhausted, and a little bit scared, it's a completely different situation!

If you could only take one flavour chocolate bar on the trip which would you take?

Rosalind: It has to be the Black Forest for me!

Andy: I can't get enough of the Seadog and the Smooth Operator. If I was castaway to a desert island, I'd have to sneak both on.

What will you miss the most when you are away at sea?

Andy: My Dad's 2 year old cocker spaniel, Holly the Dog, who's become our unofficial mascot.

Rosalind: 8 hours sleep...! We row in shifts to keep the boat moving 24 hours a day, so the most sleep you get in one go is 3 hours.
